What is the TExT Flow Test?
In mechanical surface preparation, methods such as grinding, sanding, planing and polishing generate airborne dust.
The TExT Flow Test is a practical check used by The Preparation Group during a Standard Inspection and Service to assess whether an industrial vacuum is performing as expected for its intended dust-control setup.

Your Industrial Vacuum
Many contractors don’t realise that the industrial vacuums used with grinders, planers, shotblasters and floor preparation equipment are often classed as LEV when they are used to control dust at source.
LEV systems are designed to capture potentially hazardous dust close to where it is generated, helping to prevent it from becoming airborne. If your dust extractor is connected directly to a tool or machine to capture dust, it is considered part of an LEV system.

Why this matters:
Where LEV is used to control exposure to dusts, COSHH regulations require the system to be thoroughly examined and tested by a competent person at regular intervals. For many LEV systems, the maximum interval between tests is 14 months, although some higher-risk processes may require more frequent examination. On-site, HSE inspectors may ask contractors to provide evidence that extraction systems have been tested to demonstrate compliance.

What happens in a TExT?
A TExT (Thorough Examination and Test) is the formal inspection required under COSHH to confirm that an LEV system is working effectively. During a TExT, the system is checked to ensure it continues to perform as intended.
This typically includes assessment of:

  • airflow performance
  • filter integrity and efficiency
  • seals and connections
  • condition of the equipment

The results are recorded in a digital TExT report, which should be stored securely within the owner’s equipment records.
When completed at The Preparation Group, your equipment will receive a visible PASS Sticker.

What happens if you don’t
have evidence?

Where industrial vacuums are identified as LEV, HSE may expect contractors to produce:

  • a record of the latest thorough examination and test (TExT)
  • documentation showing the system is being maintained
  • evidence the equipment is suitable for the task

Without this evidence, contractors may be asked to demonstrate how dust exposure is being controlled, leaving yourself open to non compliance.

Remember, routine checks still matter
Even when a system has passed a TExT, regular checks are essential to keep dust extraction working properly.
Simple steps should include:

  • cleaning filters regularly, following manufacturer guidelines and ensuring it is functioning correctly
  • checking hoses for damage or blockage
  • confirming seals and connections are intact
  • ensuring attachments and shrouds are compatible
  • keeping equipment clean and well maintained
These routine checks help ensure the extraction system continues to perform on-site as expected.
